Candidates go head-to-head in Ontonagon County forum

Republican and Democratic candidates in contested races in Ontonagon County will come together Tuesday night for a debate.

The candidate forum is sponsored by the Ontonagon County Republican and Democratic Parties and will give voters the opportunity to meet forum candidates as well as candidates in Ontonagon County’s contested races.

The forum will include candidates, Democrat Lon Johnson and Republican Jack Bergman who are competing for Dan Benishek’s seat for the 1st Congressional District. Also at the forum will be incumbent Democrat Scott Dianda who was elected to office in 2012 and Republican Greg Markkanen; both are competing for Michigan’s 110th state representative seat.

Secretary Nancy Warren says it’s refreshing to have both parties come together, especially when the campaign at the national level is so heated.

“…It’s important that the local folks know who their representatives are, who’s representing us, who’s making laws that affect us every day.”

Warren says other contested races include the judge, sheriff and county commissioner seats. Moderating the forum will be Ontonagon District Court and Probate Judge, Janis Burgess.

The meet and greet is at 6 and the at 7pm ET, Tuesday October 4, at the Ontonagon High School cafeteria.
