The old hospital in Phelps has long been an eyesore for people coming into town.The Vilas County community is now getting state assistance through a new program to help turn the blight into a boost for the economy.

The Wisconsin Public Service Commission recently awarded $125 million in grants for broadband expansion projects. That includes $5.4 million spread across three projects in Vilas County.

Camp Manito-Wish YMCA in Boulder Junction was selected as Vilas County Economic Development Corporation’s business of the year for 2021. In making its selection, VCEDC’s board chairman called the camp a hidden gem in the Northwoods.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Census Bureau reported 5.4 million new business applications were filed in 2021. That surpasses the record of 4.4 million set in 2020.
