Alex Young Only Official Candidate At Rhinelander Mayoral Forum

Rhinelander City Hall

The Rhinelander Mayoral Candidate Forum was held Wednesday night, hosted by the Northwoods Tobacco Free Coalition and Northwoods Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE). Both host organizations and audience members asked questions.

As the only candidate officially running for mayor of the City of Rhinelander, Alex Young did most of the talking.

Young has spent years on the city council and answered questions on tobacco and alcohol abuse, traffic circles, the City Manager position, the city golf course, keeping young people in the community, and the PRAT tax, among others.

No one expected Young to be the sole candidate running, though. Last week, Chris Frederickson and Scott Counter were informed that their candidacy papers had been found invalid by City Clerk Val Foley. It was actually Young who filed the complaints about their paperwork (more information here).

As a result, Chris Fredrickson attended the forum as an audience member, though he believes he belongs on the ballot and will eventually be on the ballot. He has appealed to the State Ethics Committee and the appeal is being processed.

Coordinator for the Northwoods Tobacco Free Coalition and Northwoods COPE Corie Zelazoski said she made the decision to only have Young participate in the Forum because at the time, he is the only official candidate for mayor.
