WXPR News

This month marks 70 years since D-Day, the landing operations at Normandy during World War 2.

Before Allied troops stormed the beach at Normandy on June 6th 1944, paratroopers were sent in behind enemy lines to cut off supplies and reinforcements.  Rhinelander’s Glenn Johnson was one of those, part of the 101st Airborne Division.  He was then captured and later escaped from a prison camp in Germany.  WXPR’s Natalie Jablonski spoke to Johnson as part of our ongoing series The Other Side of Ninety.  Johnson tells his story beginning with what happened that day after he landed in France.

After the war, Johnson returned to his hometown of Racine, where he met his wife Anne - who happened to be the sister of one of Johnson's fellow POWs in WWII.

Johnson's wife, Anne, and their son, Kenneth.
