ArtStart Rhinelander Debuts New Kind of Open Mic

ArtStart Rhinelander

There’s a new type of open mic coming to the Northwoods community Wednesday, May 30th.

The evening of performances at ArtStart in Rhinelander is called In Progressto encourage people to share things that aren’t quite done yet. The whole idea is to build a community that can support each other’s artistic endeavors as well as give constructive feedback. That being said, presenting finished or published works is also encouraged.

ArtStart Program & Operations Director Ashley McLaughlin says unlike some open mic nights that are focused on sharing just one type of art form or craft, ArtStart Presents In Progress is open to all types.

"It's really just a safe place for people to come in and show us what they're working on and form this little community group," says McLaughlin. "People that write poems can come in and share their poems. People that do theater can come in and share a skit. Musicians can come in and do a performance."

The idea is for the event to reoccur every month on the last Wednesday of the month. Event organizer Evan Verploegh says he hopes the community comes out to support it.

"To have things that are sustainable and ultimately become catalysts in the community, you need to come out and support it," says Verploegh. "No matter if you're planning on performing or just want to witness people expressing themselves in an intimate space in an intimate way, you should come out to In Progress."

ArtStart Presents In Progress will have its first open mic night Wednesday, May 30th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friends and audience members are welcome. There is no admission fee but a cash bar will be available.

Anyone who is interested in performing at the event is encouraged to sign up for a time slot here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e094aadad29a7f49-artstart3
