Fundraiser To Help Vilas Bike-Hike Trail, Relay For Life

Great Headwaters Trails

A fundraiser coming soon highlights the final push to build a bike-hike trail between Conover and Phelps.

Nine miles of the eleven mile trail have been completed with two miles leading into Phelps to be built. Jeff Currie is president of Great Headwaters Trails.

He says the Town of Phelps is working to improve a park where the trail head will be..

"...The trail will complement perfectly what is happening there and will compliment the whole downtown area in Phelps. It's not just completed two miles of the bike trail. It's giving people a way to walk into town and something that comes right into a newly developed town park..."

Currie says the final segment is planned. He says they need to get permission from the U.S. Forest Service concerning about a thousand feet of the trail route. He says a culvert failed in the finished part of the trail due to the winter and spring extreme weather.

The 2nd annual Don Gillum Memorial Bike and Hike is set for July 20 beginning in Conover. The event is named for a well-known community member and trail volunteer who died of cancer. ...

"..(the event) was suggested by his family Relay For Life of the Northwoods and Great Headwaters Trails teamed up to put it on last summer. This summer, the chambers in Conover and Phelps indicated they wanted to be partners in that event, too. All four of us are working on the event that will be put on on the 20th..."

Registration is at the Great Headwaters Trailswebsite.

We have a longer interview with Jeff Currie as the first segment of WXPR Saturday Edition at the WXPR website
