FORK Forms In Vilas County To Get Food To More Needy Kids

A non-profit organization has formed in Vilas county to address food insecurity caused by 1 out of 5 families living in poverty.

Perry Pokrandt is President of FORK...or Feed Our Rural Kids. He says their efforts are focused on the area served by the Northland Pines School District...

"...For the purpose of raising money to provide nutritional support to children from food insecure homes within the Northland Pines School District. Northland Pines represents a little more than half of Vilas county area wise..."

Pokrandt says there are agencies in the area, the food pantry and the backpack program that are working to feed the hungry. He says FORK wants to make it possible to do more...

"..What we discovered is the people being served are merely a slice of those kids who qualify needing help but don't get it. There are a lot of reasons people don't ask or don't take help. Part of FORK's role will be to help local programs go deeper and serve more kids..."

Pokrandt says the weekend backpack program has grade school kids getting food for the weekend in a backpack. Pokrandt says a delivery program of care packages called FORK CARES will soon bring food directly to the children.

Pokrandt says FORK is likely to act as a type umbrella organization to help bring coordination to the other programs and help fund raise. Individuals, businesses or organizations interested in participating or giving a monetary gift to help area children through FORK can contact Pokrandt at Feed Our Rural Kids (715) 410-8167 or perrypokrandt@gmail.com.
