The Never Forgotten Honor Flight organization based in Wausau flies veterans from central and northern Wisconsin to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials that honor their service.

The first Flight took place April 27, 2010.

Flight President Mike Thompson tells us who will be on board...

"...We have four Korea veterans and 107 Vietnam veterans on this mission.."

Thompson says they have a full day for the veterans...

"...We see all the war memorials, World War II, Korea and Vietnam memorials. At the Korea and Vietnam memorials is also the corridor where the Lincoln Memorial also stands. We spend some time with those memorials, along with the World War II memorial. We also travel through the Marine Memorial, Iwo Jima. Air Force Memorial. We go to Arlington National Cemetery to see the changing of the guard..."

A pre-flight meal will be held the night before the flight. Fifty-eight guardians will accompany the vets on the one-day round trip that departs Central Wisconsin Airport at 6:30 a.m. and is scheduled to return at approximately 10 p.m.

The public is invited to the Central Wisconsin Airport to welcome the veterans home Monday night by 8:30 p.m.

After Monday’s trip, the Never Forgotten Honor Flight will have taken 3,578 veterans to Washington, D.C. during the past ten years.

Thompson says any veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War eras are encouraged to submit an application. The veterans come from 13 counties including Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Iron, and Price.
