Is Your Cyberworld Secure? Data Privacy Day Reminds Folks To Be Sure

Mountain Home Air Force Base

It won't be long before tax refunds are sent to folks looking for a little extra money.

A state consumer protection official says it's also a time when identity thieves come out of the woodwork.

This week has been designated as Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week, and Tuesday is Data Privacy Day.

State Division of Trade & Consumer Protection spokesperson Michelle Reinen says the day reminds consumers to be vigilant...

"Data Privacy Day is a single day that is annually recognized for awareness to get consumers thinking about how they use the Internet and what kinds of details they're sharing on line. It also includes the steps they're taking to protect their personal information...."

Reinen says there are three areas they would like to see every person do with their digital devices...

"...strengthen the security around their online devices, share(information)with care and remember that personal information is like money. It needs to be valued and protected...."

She says keep anti-virus protection current, use long and complex passwords for email and on-line accounts, set devices to lock and require pass codes. She says if you received a new device over the holidays, make sure the device is set up properly. Reinen says be sure you know who you are interacting with online. She says you need to know how your apps work and never give out personal information in an unsolicited text message or social media site. Be careful of the links you see, and accept two-step authentication whenever it's offered online.
