A spokesman for the Menominee Nation says the U-S Bureau of Indian Affairs has approved plans to build a casino. The proposed casino will be built at the old Dairyland Greyhound Park near Kenosha. The old racetrack has been closed since 2009.
The project is meeting stiff opposition from another group, the Forest County Potawatomi tribe – who have its own casino near Milwaukee. Jeff Crawford...a spokesperson for the Forest County Potawatomi says the BIA has approved an off-reservation casino for a tribe that doesn't have historic ties to the region. Forest County Potawatomi Community operates a lucrative casino in Milwaukee.
Over half of the voters in Kenosha County approved the project in a non-binding referendum. The Menominee Nation says the 800-million dollar casino will include over three thousand slot machines, 75 blackjack tables, hotel, 50-thousand square feet of shopping centers and a five thousand square foot entertainment area. Governor Scott Walker says his administration will allow a 60-day comment period between the two tribes.
Governor Walker will review the proposal.
