Funding For Lindey Cleanup Appears Positive Says Council Leader

Funding appears to be in the pipeline for a closed dry cleaning business that has been identified as having toxic material.

That assessment from Rhinelander City Council Finance Committee Chair Mark Pelletier. The former Lindey Cleaners building on Stevens Street has been identified as a spot that needs cleanup says Pelletier....

"...but there's containers of solvents and stuff, drums that they're actually going to have to come and take out and find ways to dispose of. But supposedly we're looking to the point of getting it down to the ground and hopefully for the near future creating a parking lot area there..."

The building has been vacant for years. An assessment was done last year which also found asbestos. Pelletier says it looks positive that federal funding could be available to rehabilitate the property. He thinks the property could be cleaned up before the city takes ownership of it. He says the best option might be having a parking lot....

"....maybe by the end of the year we'll be able to have it as a parking lot. It would give access to some of these businesses on the back side...."

Pelletier is referring to business along Brown Street downtown who have no access to Stevens Street to the rear of their buildings. The full city council will hear more on the topic next week.
