A six hour standoff with Rhinelander police and members of the Oneida County Special Response Team ended late Tuesday when a man gave himself up.
Police Chief Michael Steffes says they were called at 3:38 p.m. to the 600 block of Pelican Street. Inside the residence a 50 year old man was alleged to be armed with a 9 millimeter handgun and was allegedly intoxicated. Rhinelander Police asked for assistance from the Sheriff's department. The S.R.T. established communication with the man, requesting he come out unarmed. After more than six hours of negotiations and use of chemical agents by the SRT, the man came out of the residence without incident at 10:16 p.m.
The subject was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for medical evaluation and detoxification. Steffes says the department is reviewing the case and will make recommendations concerning charges to the District Attorney's office. The firearm in possession of the suspect was taken by Rhinelander police. No injuries were reported. The name of the suspect will be released if and when charges are filed.
