Group Seeks Better Quality Housing In Northwoods

Oneida county has renewed its membership a regional consortium designed to improve housing in the Northwoods.

Tuesday the board approved a resolution joining again with Florence, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Vilas and three other counties in the CDBG Consortium.

Roger Luce of Oneida County Economic Development says two years ago Oneida county joined the consortium. The city of Rhinelander has been allocating Community Development Block Grant monies, but Oneida county didn't use this funding method until the consortium formed. Luce says the county used $175,000 and received another $30,000 because funds were not used in other counties....

"....we have been allocated another $140,000 to use from those existing funds. That all goes toward emergency rehab. It is a lien on the property until the property is sold, then it is paid back...."

The county board approved continuing with the consortium.

The program is administered by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development  and funds local community development activities such as affordable housing, anti-poverty programs, and infrastructure development.
