A contract to house up to 25 state inmates in the Vilas County jail was approved with the first prisoners expected to arrive next month, according to Sheriff Joe Fath.
“We are pleased with again being able to help the state prison overcrowding by utilizing our jail facilities,” Fath said. “We join Oneida County in taking state inmates. Final details on transports are being worked out between us, Oneida County, and the Department of Corrections.”
According to Vilas County jail administrator Bill Weiss, the state will pay $51.46 per prisoner per day for 290 days for gross receipts of $373,085.
“When we figure our costs for meals, medical, and other incidentals, we expect Vilas County will see a net gain of $186,000,” Weiss said.
The county board approved hiring two more correction officers for the jail and will implement 12 hour shifts.
