Displays that showcase the history of Vilas County will be developed within the new courthouse addition by a group of county municipal historical societies after presenting the idea to the county public property committee and receiving overwhelming approval.
President of the Eagle River historical society, Karen Sailer, said the original idea came from Judge Neal “Chip” Nielsen, III.
“This is a unique opportunity in this vast space and the local historical societies agree,” Sailer said. “We've listed nine historical tracks that we will work on and have contacted the state historical society how to professionally display the information without damaging walls.” Those tracks range from the chronological devleopment of Vilas County to historic resorts to Native American culture.
Sailer indicated their first display will be on the chronological history. They will use the 247 feet of wall space on the hallway connecting the new addition to the rest of the courthouse.
Community historical societies participating are Eagle River, Phelps, Land O' Lakes, Boulder Junction, Lac du Flambeau, Manitorwish Waters, Presque Isle, and the Vilas County historical society in Sayner.
