U.S. Representative Sean Duffy’s(R-Wausau) bill that would remove endangered-species protections for wolves in the lower 48 states narrowly passed the House of Represenatives Friday.

It would require the Interior Secretary to delist wolves from the Endangered Species Act by the end of 2019 “without regard to any other provision or statute of regulation that applies to issuance of such rule.” The bill also says the delisting “shall not be subject to judicial review.”

The measure passed the House by a vote of 196-180.

Proponents of delisting argue that Wisconsin has more wolves than biologists originally projected and that they kill deer and livestock.

Opponents say a healthy wolf population say wolves have only returned to about 10 percent of their original U.S. range.
