Rhinelander Council Strikes Fees For Possible ATV Users

Rhinelander's common council continues to take input on a proposed ATV-UTV ordinance within the city.

This week, City Administrator Daniel Guild reported input from an online survey has found people living outside the city limits outnumbering in-city respondents by about 3-1.

He says a proposal to require turn signals on the vehicles drew negative feedback...

"...I will remind folks from the discussion that happened back in November the reason that was important and worth looking into is at the time we were talking about opening up the entire municipality to ATV use. Based on the ordinances I've received, I don't believe there's another municipality our size that is compeletly open...."

Guild says the process is ongoing and will be based on feedback received by the public about ATV's on Rhinelander streets. Members of the council have gotten feedback. Alderperson Steve Schauer wondered whether there would be limits on noise. Lee Emmer felt if approved, routes to approved routes had to be provided.

Alderperson Tom Kelly says he received feedback about possible fees.K elly says it's important to encourage people to come to Rhinelander...

"...We're trying to do this to encourage business to come downtown from the outlying towns and tourist season especially to frequent our restaurants and do some shopping. And if we charge them $50 or $100 to come downtown for dinner, they're not going to come..."

A motion to eliminate the fee portion of the proposed ordinance was approved. More discussion on the ATV ordinance will be coming up at future meetings.
