Just A Couple Of Northwoods Road Projects Face July 4 Travelers

Northwoods travelers will see relatively few construction projects this holiday weekend.

The DOT's Regional Communications spokesperson Tegan Griffith says heaviest travel times are expected to be between noon and 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 3.

She says two major projects in Oneida county are about it in the Northwoods, with one project on Highway 51 in Arbor Vitae and the building of a roundabout on Rhinelander's west side...

"..In Vilas county, our project is Woodruff-Arbor Vitae. There will not be any lane closures at the Woodruff-Arbor Vitae project on Highway 51. Folks will be able to breeze through that project relatively smoothly. The intersection at U.S. 8-Wisconsin 47(Rhinelander) is going to have a short local detour around the intersection due to the construction going on right now..."

Wisconsin 32 near Mountain has a resurfacing project going on.

Griffith says all the construction projects have been halted for the weekend. The Department of Transportation says even though crews are not going to be present during the holiday weekend, there are, on average, 2,677 work zone crashes per year. Over the past five years in Wisconsin there have been 13,000 work zone crashes, 5,200 injuries and 50 deaths. Careless drivers may face thousands of dollars in fines and up to 3 1/2 years in prison if they injure someone in a work zone. The fines for vehicular manslaughter are even higher, as are the prison terms - as many as 10 years.
