A change in state rules means easier access to marriage files across the state.
Oneida County Register of Deeds Kyle Franson says his office not only issue deeds, but also vital records, specifically births, deaths, marriages, and divorce decrees.
He says a change in the way the marriage certificates are issued is beginning with the new year...
"..All Register of Deeds offices will be able to issue marriage certificates for anybody married throughout the State of Wisconsin. Prior to that, unfortunately, if you were married in Brown county or Dane county, you would have to go to that county and get your certified copy of that certificate..."
He says the prior system was a bother for people looking for certificates, having to drive to the originating county to get them...
"But with statewide issuance now, it has been a real convenience for driver's license issues or work-related issues. You have to provide a copy of your birth certificate, or now proving that you're married, you can now go into any Register of Deeds office, as long as you were born, or married in the State of Wisconsin, you will be able to fill out an application. You should be able to walk out with a certified copy from any Register of Deeds office..."
Franson not all vital records are eligible for statewide issuance, the State Vital Records Office is working with Register of Deeds offices to add or update specific vital records with the goal of having all eligible records available statewide.
