Meeting Tuesday Teaches Civil Dialog In Public Arenas

WIPPS

ArtStart in Rhinelander is the site of two sessions over the next two weeks to teach people how to communicate effectively concerning public policy.

The Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service is hosting public dialog training, "How To Manage Difficult Conversations" with the first sessions Tuesday at ArtStart.

Eric Giordano is an associate professor of Political Science at UW-Stevens Point and is Executive Director of the Institute.

He says the most recent political discourse across the nation is a backdrop for the sessions...

"This really is about how do we provide average citizens with tools, ideas and training on how they can be more effectively engaged locally with community issues. How they can do so effectively, maybe how they can come together to organize themselves. It's about citizen-based politics..."

Giodano says about two years ago they were approached by Rhinelander citizens to learn how to speak in a more civil tone with another and to become more engaged in the community...

"..offer some skill-based training to be used in their individual lives and also their professional lives and might inform groups that want to do more community action work..."

He says a goal is to have an effective dialog and create conditions for success. He says other areas include how to listen actively and how to deal with disruptions at meetings.

The trainings are offered free. There are four sessions set for tomorrow and another set of sessions February 4 and the morning of February 5. More information is at info@wipps.org or 715-216-6368.
