LUHS Board Vacancy To Be Posted

Lakeland Union High School

MINOCQUA – The Lakeland Union High School Board of Education will be accepting applications until June 15 to fill the vacancy on the board left by long-time board member and current board president Ed Schaub, Jr., who resigned by letter May 18.

In his resignation letter to the board, Schaub said he was “grateful for having the opportunity to serve on the board” and offered his “best wishes for its continued success.” The 71-year-old Minocqua resident did not offer an explanation for his departure. The board, meeting in special session Thursday, formally accepted Schaub’s resignation. Members then agreed to have the applicants appear at their June 22 meeting to say why they want the position and to answer questions. Members will then vote to seat a candidate, who will finish out Schaub’s at-large term, which ends in 2022.

In a related matter, Gary Smith urged fellow board members to table electing new officers until after the successful candidate is sworn in on May 22. With eight members present, there could be a tie on selecting an officer, he said. “It’s not a long wait,” said Smith, who received support from other board members. Vice president Shari Nimsgern, who chaired the meeting, said she was advised that the board should elect a new president “as soon as possible” once that officer resigns. But she did not oppose the delay.

The board is eying some type of recognition ceremony for Schaub, who had been on the board for 34 years, 18 of them as its president. The COVID-19 pandemic guidelines, however, has pushed off an immediate gathering for that purpose.
