VA Reminds Veterans You Can Still Get Flu Shot

It’s not too late to get your flu shot. The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center is reminding veterans enrolled in VA healthcare that flu shots are still available. Veterans  can visit a VA Community Outpatient Clinic in the U.P. or northern Wisconsin.

Public Affairs Officer Brad Nelson says while most people get the vaccine in the late fall, the respiratory virus can hang around until late spring.

“…another option, however because we have vets spread out over a large area that we serve, is they can go to their local Walgreens. The VA has partnered with Walgreens nationwide and if their local Walgreens pharmacy is participating they just need to go in and tell them they’re a local vet participating in VA healthcare.”

Nelson says Walgreens will contact the medical center to update their medical records. No appointments are necessary and vaccinations are free. He says any vet who may have gotten a shot through a private doctor should contact their VA Medical Center for a record update. It’s recommended anyone 6 months and older get a flu shot.
