Allergist Notes Second Earliest Date For Pollen

U.S. governement

An allergist says don't be fooled by the late winter weather: it's allergy time and those symptoms you've been having might not be a cold, but allergies.

Dr. Steve Kagen of Appleton has been keeping detailed records for decades and says it doesn't matter that you see snowflakes, the things that produce sneezes, coughs, and runny nose and eyes are already here...

".....we've been monitoring the air in northeast Wisconsin for over a quarter-century, and this is the second earliest tree pollination that we've seen. Today we've caught 441 tree pollens, There's cedar pollens in the air, elm, poplar and cottonwoods. This is the onset of spring, the biological onset of spring..."

Kagen says if the symptoms you're having persist for more than a few days what you might have are allergies. He says there are over-the-counter remedies available, but cautions you should talk to your physician first.

Kagen was elected to the 8th Congressional District seat from 2007 through 2011.
