Health officials urged the wearing of a mask during the coronavirus outbreak is a best practice anyone can do to protect themselves and others. But during a recent online meeting about Oneida county tourism, the results were reported to be mixed.
Officials reported many people in bars and restaurants were without face protection, others did have a mask but fewer. Oneida County Public Health Officer Linda Conlon says they're coming out with new messaging, "Be Kind, I Mask For You, You Mask For Me". Conlon says the idea is the mask isn't just for you, but other people as well. She says they know that visitors want to come here to get a break, but their actions could hurt..
"That's what puts us at the most risk in our area is that our vacationers and visitors are being more carefree and not utilizing(personal protective equipment) or not even social distancing or washing their hands..."
She said she hopes local businesses help out with signs promoting safety. She says wait staff at local establishments can run a big risk...
"Many times employees, especially waitresses, are face-to-face with(customers) all day. They are just as important as our customers in protecting them. If they become sick and they are a contact, everybody in the restaurant is a contact of them..."
Conlon said if establishments use proper technique and quality dish washing products including sanitizing, it is o.k. to wash dishes for reuse. Some establishments have gone to using disposable paper or plastic plates and utensils.
