The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is reporting another 10,000 COVID-19 cases Wednesday.

Ten of the highest single day totals have come in the last two weeks.

The state is averaging more than 9,60 cases a day. That’s 3,000 more than the peak in November 2020.

The high case load is impacting our healthcare systems.

“I would say right now, in part due to COVID hospitalizations and in part due to other vectors, we’re in a dire state. Not just at Aspirus, but throughout the Upper Midwest,” said Dr. Steve Phillipson is the Aspirus Regional Director for Hospital Medicine Services.

As of Tuesday, Aspirus had 127 COVID-positive patients hospitalized. 43 of them were in the ICU.

Phillipson says it’s gotten to the point where if you need medical attention, you will likely find yourself waiting for a long period of time.

“We will sometimes try 20 and 30 different larger hospitals to try to get someone to the right place and not be able to find a place or bed for them to go to. The situation is rough,” said Phillipson.

Phillipson encourages people to get vaccinated and their booster if you haven’t already.

Eighty percent of Aspirus COVID patients are not fully vaccinated.
