The Minocqua Plan Commission has given its blessing to a new shelter design plan for Torpy Park.
The Minocqua Lions Club’s original plan drew public outcry when it proposed to remove 13 trees to make way for a large structure. Many argued that the old white pines are essential to the aesthetics of the downtown park.
Minocqua Town Chair Mark Hartzheim says the revised plan calls for a building about half the size of the original design.
“That would essentially fit in a slot up there that would not affect really any trees. One tree would have to be removed, but it’s a tree that would be slated for removal anyway because it’s in a state of decline and becoming orange and dead at the top.”
The newly proposed building would be 30 by 80 feet. It’s expected to cost less than the earlier one, and address the public’s interest in maintaining the natural feel of the area.
“Some of the savings in building a smaller structure will be offset by improving the appearance of it by adding asphalt shingles, and some wood timber that is designed to match the existing pavilion a little bit better.”
The Minocqua Town Board will take up the proposal at its Tuesday meeting
