Public Invited To Invasive Species Meeting This Week

WHIP

The annual partnership meeting of a multi-agency coop dedicated to controlling invasives species in the Northwoods is being held Thursday and public input is welcomed.

The Wisconsin Headwaters Invasive Partnership, or WHIP, includes Oneida and Vilas counties and fights mainly terrestrial invasive species but also aquatic invasives.

Oneida County Conservationist Michele Sadauskas says the group works toward education, control work and trying to bring groups together to control the spread of invasives.

Sadauskus says they have less funding, so they would like to prioritize their efforts...

".....do we want to work on control work? Get out there on some (invasive) sites? Do we want to up the ante for education outreach? Do more work with students, towns throughout Oneida and Vilas counties? Where do we want to go and pinpoint and focus our energies for 2017...."

Sadauskus outlines the day...

".....we'll have Rosie Page, our coordinator, do a presentation at 1 p.m. There will be a refreshment break and then to the business meeting. Everyone is welcome to the business meeting and that is where we will focus on 2017. Everyone is welcome to stay the whole afternoon..."

The growing number of invasives in the Northwoods, both land and water, has challenged the organization.

The meeting is Thursday, March 9 in the county board room of the Oneida County courthouse. The county Land and Water Conservation Department has more information.
