Don't use fireworks in either the national or state forests or you could be cited.

Possessing, igniting, discharging or using any kind of fireworks is prohibited on National Forest System lands says Hilary Markin, spokesperson for the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest....

"....if you're coming to the forest for the 4th of July, leave your fireworks at home. With the safety aspect of shooting off fireworks in the national forest it's illegal to do that. Come, have fun, enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend, but leave your fireworks at home...."

Fireworks are also illegal in Wisconsin state parks and forests. A citation for illegal fireworks in a state park or forest can cost up to $200 and parents could be liable for the full costs of putting out a fire started by their children playing with or setting off fireworks.

The DNR's Catherine Koele says anyone responsible for starting a wildfire in Wisconsin is liable not only for the cost of putting the fire out but also for any damages. The Forest Service's Hilary Markin says there still is plenty to enjoy in the woods this weekend...

"....I want to encourage everyone to come out and enjoy their national forest. Bring your family, bring your friends, bring your picnic and come and see what the national forest has to offer...."

The use or possession of fireworks on federal lands is subject to confiscation and fines of up to $5,000 and/or six months in jail along with paying associated costs.
