Deer Surveillance Tags Remain Available For Hunters In The Northwoods

Wikimedia Commons

Special permit surveillance tags for deer hunters in Oneida, Vilas, Lincoln, Langlade and Forest counties are still available at Northwoods DNR offices.

Wildlife biologist Janet Brehm in Merrill says the permits are available at the Rhinelander Service Center and at the Merrill DNR ranger station.

The tags can be used on select public lands in portions of Oneida, Forest, Lincoln and Langlade counties and portions of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Forest, Vilas, Oneida and Forest counties.

Brehm says the permits are on a first-come, first-served basis. The DNR is hoping successful hunters will bring in the deer heads and lymph glands so biologists can have data to determine the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease in the wild deer herd.

CWD restrictions were established in Oneida, Lincoln, Forest and Langlade counties after finding infected captive deer near Three Lakes and also CWD in wild deer in the Town of Harrison Lincoln county near the Oneida county line.

More information is on the DNR website.
