Canoe The Yawkee Shoreline This Week With NWLT

Northwoods Land Trust

One of the largest donations to a land trust in Wisconsin history took place in the Northwoods last fall, and now you can get an up close view of it.

Last October, the Northwoods Land Trust in Eagle River announced a 4.4 mile stretch of shoreline and more than 400 acres of land were put into land trust by the Yawkee Lumber Company. It's believed to be the largest shoreline donation in state history from a monetary perspective. The shoreline is on Lake Katherine in the Town of Hazelhurst.

Outreach and Monitoring Coordinator for the Trust, Troy Walters, says paddlers will see it up close..

"..On Thursday, August 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, we're going to be paddling around Lake Katherine. That area has the Yawkee donation on it. We're going to be observing a lot of the shoreline protection frontage that easement gave Northwoods Land Trust..."

He says they hope to get out of the boats for a few minutes to explore Tigertail point that has great views. Participants need to bring their own boat, paddle, PFD, raingear, water, and water shoes.Walters says it's free and open to the public but paddlers need to register at Northwoods Land Trust.

The Northwoods Land Trust office phone number 715-479-2490 or email Walters at troy@northwoodslandtrust.org by Friday, Aug 16. Space is limited.
