Help Conservationists Find Aquatic Invasive Species This Saturday

River Alliance of Wisconsin

This Saturday you can help with an inventory of aquatic invasive species on Northwoods water bodies.

Volunteers are needed to join the Oneida County Land and Water Conservation Department as they team up with the River Alliance of Wisconsin, DNR and others to search for AIS.

This one-day event is the Statewide AIS Snapshot Day, sponsored by the River Alliance of Wisconsin. Oneida County AIS coordinator Stephanie Boismenue describes what is happening..

"..On Snapshot Day we will be getting volunteers to a local training site where they will be taught about different invasive species, identifying them and different monitoring techniques. From there, we will break into different teams and venture out to monitoring sites where we can collect specimens and then we'll return to our training site to confirm our finds..."

Boismenue says the results are sent into the DNR which she says will help with management of any new populations of invasive species. She says volunteer help is essential to success...

"..This is a free family friendly event recommended for ages 8 and up. Children often make good monitors and they often can get into small places and get into the water. They're very enthusiastic about getting into the water to look for these type of things. For them, it's almost a game of 'Where's Waldo?' to help us find these invasive species..."

To find out more, view meeting locations, and to sign up to monitor, you're asked to visit River Alliance of Wisconsin website. We have a link to the site here.

Boisnmenue says you can also contact her at the Land and Water Conservation office at the courthouse. (715-369-7835) (sboismenue@co.oneida.wi.us.)
