With the latest finding of a deer having Chronic Wasting Disease south of Rhinelander, the DNR is authorizing additional hunting permits in selected areas.
The CWD-positive deer was a mature doe that was harvested in September, which is the fourth CWD-positive wild deer detected since fall 2017 in Oneida and Lincoln counties, all of which are from within a two-mile area near the town of Crescent.
DNR Area Wildlife Supervisor Chuck McCullough says CWD sampling will continue to be a priority in the intensive surveillance area which is in the 10 mile circle surrounding the positive detections...
"...Because of that, we're issuing surveillance permits to private landowners and also on public land where giving permits on selected public lands within the surveillance area near those positives..."
McClullough says they want to sample as many deer in an area as possible...
"...There are two requirements. One, it needs to be an adult deer that you take on those permits. The other is it needs to be tested for CWD. Those are additional deer tags. You need a deer license first to get one of them..."
The public areas with the additional permits include Woodboro Wildlife Area, Oneida county; Menard Island Special Use Area, Lincoln county; portions of Oneida County Forest near Woodboro; portions of Oneida county forest near Enterprise; portions of Lincoln county forest; and portions of Langlade county forest.
McCoullough say hunters interested in obtaining permits must make an appointment for an in-person meeting with DNR wildlife management staff during open office hours at the Rhinelander DNR Service Center.
