Potato Harvesting at a Standstill

An unseasonably wet fall and high humidity has caused the delay of potato harvesting in central Wisconsin. Director of the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association Tamas Houlihan says harvesting is delayed by nearly a week in some parts of the central Wisconsin.

…up until September sixth or seventh everything was progressing very, very well; excellent quality, good yields, and then just a tremendous amount of rain especially in the Northwestern part of the state. So, we are going to give it at least four or five days before the fields are able to have the heavy equipment go back in them.”

Despite the unseasonable weather, Houlihan says it’s been an excellent year.  He says crop yields are at their average rate of 430 to 450 hundred weight per acre and return sales at 10 to 12 dollars per 100 pounds of potatoes.
