AmeriCorps has partnered with the Lac du Flambeau Tribe and 10 other tribal nations in Wisconsin to implement programs to combat substance abuse in their community.
Called the Tribal AmeriCorps Program and led by the Northwoods NiiJii Community, AmeriCorps members are stationed around the country to spend a year addressing challenges their community faces. Members will be stationed in Lac du Flambeau to put to practice prevention activities and engage with youth to improve their substance abuse environment. Federal Program Coordinator Sue Wolf says 10 people from Lac du Flambeau have been through the program over the last 5 years and says anyone who applies won’t regret the opportunity…
“…and that’s what we’ve found with people who have been involved in the program… A lot of them have gone on to obtain jobs, or start their own companies, or get into the work field that maybe they wouldn’t have before this. We’ve had college grads that have been with us that couldn’t get a job right away, so they wanted more experience.”
Wolf says those who apply will be mentoring youth at the Lac du Flambeau School doing activities to prevent alcohol or drug abuse.
Tribal AmeriCorps Members are volunteers, and receive a living stipend, meals, lodging and recreation. After their term is completed members receive a $5,750 educational award. Term of service starts September 7 and goes through August 2017.
Application deadline is July 31, and applicants must be 18 years old. For more information visit contact the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Office.
