Update Monday: Woman Missing After Fall Into River In Western Upper Michigan

Search efforts continue for a Wisconsin resident feared to have gone over the falls on the Black River in Ironwood Township.

The Gogebic County Sheriff's Department reports Saturday evening 22-year-old Stephanie Narvaez of Watertown and 22-year-old Karl Nelson of Milwaukee were hiking in the area above Rainbow Falls. Narvaez lost her footing and slipped into the river and was carried over the falls. Attempts by Nelson to rescue Narvaez failed.

The Michigan State Police Dive Team didn't locate the victim on Sunday.

The team reported dangerous currents and treacherous terrain underwater. The search continued Monday.

The area in and around Rainbow Falls remains closed at this time.

A search was underway this weekend for a woman missing after falling into the Black River in the western Upper Peninsula.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department says the 22 year old woman from Watertown, Wisconsin reportedly fell into the Black River at Rainbow Falls in Ironwood Township on Saturday.

Search and rescue personnel tried to find her, and a Michigan State Police Dive team had been called in Sunday.

The area of Rainbow Falls is closed to the public until further notice.
