Flooding May Mean Private Wells Should Be Tested

WAOW Television

Officials are issuing a warning after flooding over the weekend in parts of the area.

After heavy rainfall, experts say that private wells can flood allowing bacteria and other harmful contaminants to get into your water.

Liesa Lehmann, a section chief with the Department of Natural Resources, said you should test your water before drinking it.

"If they notice any changes in the color or taste or smell of the water, we definitely encourage people don't drink the water, if you have any concerns, because it is possible it can be contamined and could make you sick," she said.

Lehmann recommends using bottled water until the flood waters recede. She also encourages people to have their well professionally cleaned and re-tested before using the water again.
