Learning in Retirement Program Goes Virtual for the Fall

The Learning in Retirement program at Nicolet College is going virtual this year.

LIR will be offering 21 different presentations this fall. The topics range from nature to genealogy to art.

Some classes will last just a couple of hours while other will meet throughout the fall.

Learning in retirement coordinator Brenda Peltier said one of the biggest challenges is making sure members are comfortable with the technology needed for the classes.

“We have this very precious population and we want to make sure people aren’t getting frustrated with the technologies that they’re being faced with right now,” said Peltier.

Every time someone signs up for a class they’re asked if they need support for zoom training. They’ll be shown everything from how to download it to how to use different aspects and settings.

Even though the classes are being done virtually, Peltier said it’s important the courses don’t lose their most important aspect.

“The biggest reason they join LIR is for the socialization, you know, yes they learn all kinds of great things from all the presenters, but one of the main things that they miss is the socialization,” said Peltier. “We’re going to try to do things in zoom so that they’ll have a little opportunity to hopefully socialize a little bit before the meeting starts.”

The member fee is reduced to $30 this year.
