State Health Leaders Optimistic About Vaccine Rollout So Far

Wisconsin Health Care Associaton

On Monday, a broad new group of people in Wisconsin will become eligible for COVID-19 vaccines.

People age 16 or older with certain medical conditions will be eligible.

The conditions include chronic diseases, diabetes, and obesity.

The vaccine rollout has been successful in Wisconsin compared to other states, allowing the state to move up eligibility dates for the new group.

On Thursday, Department of Health Services Deputy Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk sounded optimistic about where the state stands with regard to vaccinations.

“Your patience and persistence and the hard work of our vaccine team and our network of vaccine providers across the state is all paying off. As we look toward May, when every resident of Wisconsin age 16 and older will be eligible, let’s keep up that patience and that persistence. Get ready. The more people vaccinated in our state, the safer we will be,” Willems Van Dijk said.

Nearly 800,000 people in Wisconsin have already gotten both doses of the vaccine.

The state is still averaging more than 400 new COVID-19 cases per day.

More than 6,500 people have died of the disease in Wisconsin.
