Emberlight Festival Brings Broadway to the Upper Peninsula

A group of singers who have headlined on the stages of Broadway and Carnegie Hall added the Historic Ironwood Theatre to the list last weekend.

They performed as part of Ironwood’s inaugural Emberlight Festival.

The Emberlight’s Production of “Broadway Under the Stars” featured Broadway performers like Kaley Ann Voorhees, who played Christine in Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera, and singers from the Metropolitan Opera like Ironwood’s own Miles Mykkanen.

The singers came together for three performances of the show at the Historic Ironwood Theatre, which drew audience members from Ironwood and from out of town.

It’s just one of a number of shows, recitals and exhibits in Ironwood for this summer’s inaugural Emberlight Festival.

“It’s all about being exposed to something new and for people not to have to leave the area to experience world class art,” Cindy Franck, the festival’s creative producer, says.

This year’s Emberlight Festival has included Art in the Park, a poetry reading and classical music recitals.

“We really tried hard to get every part of the arts represented,” Franck explains. “This year, the only thing we weren’t able to accomplish was dance, so that’s something that’s on our priority list for next year.”

Next up on the festival’s agenda – an international film festival.

It’ll feature short films from six different continents and a premiere of the documentary film, Route 2 Elsewhere, about Ironwood and other small towns along US Highway 2.

The festival will culminate with an awards presentation this Friday.
