Hunters hunt for ammo amid ongoing shortage this deer season

Gun deer hunting season is in full swing. Although there’s a steady supply of deer in the Northwoods, the same cannot be said about ammunition.

“Ever since after COVID first started and things got weird, this has never gone away,” says Chris Turk, the manager of Hodag Guns and Loan. “It’s that high demand for ammunition with the millions of new gun owners.”

When the pandemic started, the store sold a lot of guns – many to first-time gun buyers.

And when people buy guns, they also buy ammunition.

Now there’s hardly enough to go around.

“We have some ammo right now,” Turk says. “But not most of the ammunition people are looking for and can’t get. That we just don’t have either.”

Turk says hunting cartridges have been especially hard to come by, and even when they are available, they’re more expensive.

Is there an end in sight to this shortage?

Turk thinks so, but it might not be soon.

“It just might take another year or two,” he says. “The market has to adjust to all the new gun owners.”
