Special Congressional Election Date Could Move; Democrats Want All-Mail Election

Ben Meyer/WXPR

The chair of Democratic Party of Wisconsin wants mail-ballot-only election in next month’s special election in the 7th Congressional District.

Ben Wikler said he wanted an absentee ballot sent to every voter in the northern Wisconsin district in the race to replace former Congressman Sean Duffy.

That would require an act of the state legislature.

But Gov. Tony Evers said he’s considering moving the May 12 election date amid coronavirus concerns.

Unlike last week’s spring elections, Evers would likely have the power to move a special election without legislative approval.

“It is something that we’re taking a close look at,” said Ryan Nilsestuen, Evers’ chief legal aide.   “As the Governor has said before, it’s going to be following the science.  We’re taking a look to see where the number of cases are in terms of the 7th Congressional District.  It is, as you know, an especially large congressional district.  It impacts a lot of municipalities.”

Because of coronavirus transmission fears, Evers tried to move last week’s election.  He was blocked by the state Supreme Court.

Ben worked as the Special Topics Correspondent at WXPR from September 2019 until November 2021. He now contributes occasionally to WXPR. During his full-time employment, his main focus was reporting on environment and natural resources issues in northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula as part of The Stream, a weekly series.
