The Department of Natural Resources' Wolf Management Plan Committee addressed the condition of Wisconsin's wolf population Thursday.
During the meeting, DNR Large Carnivore Specialist Randy Johnson showed a map showing wolves well established in northern Wisconsin.
The map also showed wolves had established themselves in the central part of the state….
Wolve are a native species to Wisconsin, but had disappeared from the state for a time.
They returned on their own after federal protections were put in place.
Wolves are no longer on the federal endangered species list.
Wolf numbers in Wisconsin were believed to be around 1-thousand animals, but a wolf hunt in February went well over the planned target.
State-licensed hunters killed 218 wolves, almost 100 animals more than their quota.
A study by University of Wisconsin scientists says people killed about 100 wolves in addition to that, mainly due to poaching.
