Vilas Committee Wants ER Tennis Courts To Be Relocated

National Park Service

The tennis courts on the Vilas County fairgrounds property need to be rehabilitated but with the present lease to the Eagle River Tennis Association set to expire in two years, the Vilas County Forestry, Land & Redreation Committee strongly suggest they be located elsewhere.

Tennis Association representative Sherry Stecker indicated the life of tennis courts are about 20 years or less in winter areas and the present courts are about 50 years old. “We've looked at five or six options with reconstruction estimated at $200,000,” Stecker said.

Vilas County board chairman and committee member Ron DeBruyne indicated the county talked about moving the courts before but moved the baseball fields to Oldenburg Sports Park, saying “hopefully the Tennis Association could find a different location.”

“We are not adverse to another location,” Stecker said, “and we've looked at Oldenburg Sports Park and Northland Pines campus. The Pines property would be easier to find, especially for our visitors.”

The committee favored a partnership with the school with DeBruyne saying by consensus it's time to vacate the present location.
