Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest-U.S. Forest Service

Progress continues in portions of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest ravaged by heavy rains and flooding in 2016 and 2018.

"...This is going to be our big push with construction happening this summer. We have lots of roads under construction right now and more to come as we go through the summer months. We hope to have everything done by the end of the construction season. We may have a few road projects that will carry over to next year, but the bulk of the work will be done this summer..."

With both of these events, the Forest has been working with the Federal Highway Administration’s Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division to complete damage survey reports, negotiate repairs and complete permanent repairs. Markin says details of the repairs are available online...

"On our website you can go check these out these updates every week.. You'll see a map, a list of roads and what's happening on those roads. The ones in orange are under construction. Then you can look at the chart and see how many days it might be under construction. Some have temporary closures on them so they might be closed for a day or two until the work is complete.."

The National Weather Service reported multiple rounds of severe storms impacted Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin Monday July 11, 2016. The flooding was so severe in northwestern Wisconsin that no travel was advised due to washouts and water over roads.

Rainfall amounts were 8-14 inches across northern Wisconsin from Danbury to Hurley. The Saxon harbor area of northern Iron County was hit with major flooding from the many creeks, rivers and streams that flow into it.
