It's fair time in another Northwoods county as the Vilas County Fair in Eagle River is underway.

It's the 103rd year for the event.

County Fair Board President Dale Ayers says old friends and neighbors meet and it's a good chance for visitors to get acquainted...

"...It's a good time to meet people you haven't seen all year. They always come to the fair and you see them at the fair every year. Everybody is welcome to come to our fair...it's going to be a beautiful weekend, not too hot, come to the fair instead of going out to the lake..."

The Vilas County Fair gets underway Thursday8/10) and the event begins it's second century.

The 101st Fair is held at the fairgrounds on Highway 70 in Eagle River.

The Vilas County Fair begins Thursday(8/13) at the fairgrounds in Eagle River and a spokesperson says it's a closing treat to summer for local residents and visitors.

The fair runs through Sunday. The first Vilas County Fair began Sept. 7, 1916.  There were 190 entries of vegetables, grains and grasses  plus  50 livestock exhibits.

Contest Underway To Name The Fairgrounds in Merrill

The city of Merrill wants a fresh start when taking over the Lincoln County Fairgrounds, including a new name for the property.

While both city and county officials agreed on terms of the sale last week, the transaction won’t take place until September.

In the meantime, a special committee appointed by the mayor, is holding a contest to rename the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. The contest also will help raise funds for the future development and rehabilitation of the property.

Good weather brought out tens of thousands of visitors to the Vilas County Fair which ended Sunday in Eagle River.

Fair Assistant Secretary Debra Eicher says the turnout was heavy...

 

"...it was very successful. We had so many new events. We had great attendance, somewhere between fifteen and twenty thousand(visitors) as best as we could tell because we have free admission..."

She says the public came forward with exhibits...
