Evers Wins Democratic Nod For Governor, Engebretson Defeats Ewert

12:15 a.m. (8/15/2018)About a third of the state's registered voters selected candidates to round out the races for November's main election.

Tony Evers easily outdistanced a crowed field of Democrats to win the ballot spot against incumbent Republican Governor Scott Walker.

In the 7th Congressional District Democratic primary, lawyer Margaret Engebretson defeated Brian Ewert, a physician, to earn the right to take on incumbent Republican Sean Duffy. Engebretson ran on a single-payer healthcare platform, whereas Ewert wanted to fix the current system.

Republican Leah Vukmir defeated Kevin Nicholson to challenge incumbent Democrat Tammy Baldwin this fall for the U.S. Senate.

In three area counties, voters picked a sheriff.

In Oneida county a Republican primary found incumbent Grady Hartman outdistancing challengers Larry Mathein and Greg Gardner. Hartman will face Constitution Party challenger Tom Wakely who received a handful of votes.

In Forest County, incumbent Republican John Dennee outdistanced Republican challenge Jason Novak. There is no Democrat in the race.

In Lincoln county, the Republican primary for sheriff was won by Ken Schneider over Pete Borchardt.

In Lincoln county, Coroner Paul Proulx won the primary

In Forest county, John Doane won a seat on the Crandon school board.

In other statewide races, Mandela Barnes won the Democratic nod for Lt. Governor, Doug LaFollette for Secretary of State, Sarah Godlewski for Treasurer. Other Republican winners were Jay Schroeder for Secretary of State, Travis Hartwig for Treasurer. With Paul Ryan leaving the U.S. House, Democrat Randy Bryce will face Republican Brian Steil.

(10:45 p.m.)Democrats have picked a nominee to run against incumbent Republican Scott Walker in November.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers easily outdistanced the remaining 8 contenders to win the Democratic nod. He was leading runnerup Mahlon Mitchell by a 2-1 margin.

In the U.S. Senate race involving Republicans Leah Vukmir and Kevin Nicholson, Vukmir had a 52-39% lead over Nicholson and was declared the winner. She will face incumbent Democrat Tammy Baldwin.

For the U.S. House 7th District Democratic primary, Margaret Engebretson had a10 poiont  lead over Brian Ewert. That winner will take on incumbent Republican Sean Duffy.

Locally, two Sheriff's incumbents were leading early on, as Oneida County Sheriff Grady Hartman was leading Larry Mathein and Greg Gardner.

Forest County Sheriff John Dennee was leading challenger Jason Novak on the Republican ticket by a 4-1 margin.

In the Oneida race, the winner will likely face Constitution Party challenger Tom Wakely.

In Forest county, there is no other sheriff candidate.

In Lincoln county the sheriff's race was razor thin, and Coroner Paul Proulx was far ahead.
