'MASH' Blood Drive Moves To National Guard Armory

Community Blood Center

It looks like a re-creation of the long-ago TV series M*A*S*H.

While the TV show was fiction, this event has a very real outcome for people needing blood.

The Community Blood Center of Appleton is sponsoring its annual MASH blood drive July 18 at the Rhinelander National Guard Armory.

Community Blood Center spokesperson Jill Butzein explains what's happening...

"....Each year we host several Army-themed blood drives in Appleton, Waupaca, Rhinelander and Merrill. We try to set it up like the famous TV show MASH. We like to hold them in a public gathering place. We partner with veterans and armories..."

Butzein says they want to have an atmosphere of fun while people are donating blood. She says they will have a military-style canteen and giveaways for donors. She says summer is a tougher time to get blood donations...

"Donations drop in the summer, usually for two reasons: people are busier with summer vacations, they have fuller schedules. Another main reason is our colleges and high schools are out for the summer and that represents about 500 donations a month. We're hoping to make sure we have a healthy blood reserve ready to go for our hospitals and patients...."

The Community Blood Center's MASH blood drive is Wednesday, July 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Rhinelander. More information is at communityblood.org
