Three Lakes Gives Green Light to Library Expansion
The Three Lakes town board has unanimously approved a proposal to expand the local library. The board of trustees has been planning the renovation for more than three years.
The plan for renovating and expanding the Edward U. Demmer Memorial Library includes a 4000 square foot addition. Board President Vicki Ruehling says the extra space is badly needed, and points to a 20 percent increase in the number of library visits last year.
“So many people today think, that with the internet and ebooks, that libraries have become a thing of the past. But the reality is that most libraries, including the Edward U. Demmer Memorial library, are used now more than ever.”
Ruehling says the changes will include more meeting rooms and an expanded children’s department. There will also be energy efficiency updates that she hopes will save money on utility payments. Now that the town board has approved the proposal, the library plans to begin fundraising to pay for the more than $2.5 million renovation. If all goes well construction could be underway by this time next year.
