Deer Season Means Early Vacation For Some Northwoods Students

en.wikipedia.org

Northland Pines School District has a new vacation this school year. Students and teachers will have the whole week off at Thanksgiving for deer season.

Last year, nearly 200 students in the Northland Pines middle school and high school were absent from school on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving break, many of them to take part in the 9-day deer hunting season. That’s nearly 15% of the district student body. This year, the Northland Pines School District responded by adjusting its vacation schedule accordingly. As superintendent Dr. Mike Richie explains,

“I for one as a superintendent don’t like two-day weeks. They’re very distractive [sic], and when you look at that and what’s best for education and not having half the class gone, we thought that we would, at least for one year, try, giving everyone the whole week off .

So far, there has been nothing put positive feedback from parents. The district will make up for the lost days in November by adding one day each in January and June. Richie also explained that they’ve built in enough minutes to accommodate up to four snow days. We’ve had one so far.

Crandon Schools are also off the week of Thanksgiving.
