Winter Is Here, So Is Tourism

It quickly went from fall to winter, but officials think this winter could be good for tourism.

Department of Tourism spokesperson Kristina LeVan says the public does travel in the winter for snowmobiling, skiing of all types, snow tubing and festivals.

She says many ski hills are opening for the season because of the snow and cold which has settled into the Midwest....

"....not a lot of states have the winters like we do here in Wisconsin or the Midwest. We're always welcoming travelers and part of that is our marketing and on TravelWisconsin.com and our snow conditions reports that travelers have access to all of our events and activities that they can experience in Wisconsin...."

Locally, Kari Zambon from Holiday Acres is the chair of the Oneida County Tourism Council. She says there are many events going on, but a real hidden asset are the number of skiing trails and courses offered....

"....I think within a half-hour drive(of Rhinelander) you could stay for a week and ski different trails every single day of the week and not have to repeat. They're beautiful, they are through incredibly scenic areas. We are blessed...."

Minocqua Winter Park is considered a premier cross-country ski facility. Overall, tourism officials say nearly 4,000 jobs in Oneida and Vilas counties alone are the result of tourism.
